5 Card Draw Strategies
Five card draw is considered to be a home style poker variant. Many players who play this variant take this variant for granted and some of them play in a clueless manner. Well, this is not the way this game is to be approached. There is always room for improvement and you better watch out for the nuances. You should actually try to win. You can become too casual in your approach thinking this game is the simplest. However, that is not the case. A serious approach matters in minting money out of this game.
It does not matter on whether you are playing for recreation or for money. There is lot of room for improvement. And you should work with a sense of competence. In 5 card draw, the position you occupy in the table is crucial to decide on which hand to play and which hand to discard.
If you are the first player to act, in 5 card draw, you should be playing with at least a combination which is a pair of kings. If you do not have a pair of kings, choose to play with hands that are better than that. This is very important if you are playing from a very early position, where you are the first to act.
If you are sitting in a position where you are second to act, it helps to play with a hand that has a jack or better. This hand is best played when the player who is supposed to have acted first have folded the hand. This is because, the player before you does not have a good hand and when it is your turn to act; this hand has a scope for winning and improvement. Of course, further draws should tell the rest of the story.
If you are playing from the position of the dealer you will be playing with hands that have a 9-or-better hand. You should watch if anyone have raised or called before you make your play. If you have a JJ or a better hand you should or you have a KK or a better hand you can raise from the button. In some cases even if you have medium hands, if the players at the table are poor players you can call from the dealer position. The power of the position that you occupy dictates how you should play.
If you are playing from the small blind position you can open if you have seven or higher hands. This position is from where you can try to steal the pot if the pot is being folded around you. From this position you can quite call any hand combo. You will be able to maximum replacement cards from this position. Even if you have a worse hand and you are being folded to in the small blind position, you can actually keep the best 3 card hand and you can pretend like you are having a three of a kind. If you are smart, this works. It depends on how you develop your skill in betting.
If you are playing from the big blind position you have to see if all of them are folding to the small blind. And, if the small blind limps, you should be raising with any kind of hand that you might have. If the small blind raises instead of limping, then you can re-raise if you have a hand that has 10-10 or a better combo from the position of the big blind.
