Seven card stud is the game where players are dealt with seven cards each; however, the hand that hits the pot is the highest 5 card poker hand per regular poker hand rankings. Razz poker is the low ball version of seven card stud.

Stud is being played as one of the poker variants in the mixed poker game known as H.O.R.S.E.

H.O.R.S.E. is about different games and the S in horse denotes stud. They go as follows:

  • H stands for Hold 'em
  • O for Omaha
  • R for Razz
  • S for Stud
  • E for eight-or-better

A total of 8 players participate in the seven card stud game. The poker action includes fold, check, bet, call, raise, and re-raise until all the players at the table have invested equal sum. The players still heads up move on to the next round.

The game progresses as follows:

  • Players make the ante. Ante is important and mandatory in most of the stud and draw variants of poker. There are no blinds in stud and draw poker variants.
  • First Betting Round: Each player at the table is dealt with two cards face down and one card face up. The player with the highest ranking face up card is expected to bring in as a move to open the betting round. The betting progresses in the clockwise direction and the sooner the other players have made their bet the game progresses to the next round.
  • Second Betting Round: Each player at the table is dealt with one face up card. The player with the highest ranking face up card starts off with the bet and the betting progresses in the clockwise direction and the sooner the other players have made their bet the game progresses to the next round.
  • Third Betting Round: Each player at the table is dealt with one face up card. The player with the highest ranking face up card starts off with the bet and the betting progresses in the clockwise direction and the sooner the other players have made their bet the game progresses to the next round.
  • Fourth Betting Round: Each player at the table is dealt with one face up card. The player with the highest ranking face up card starts off with the bet and the betting progresses in the clockwise direction and the sooner the other players have made their bet the game progresses to the next round.
  • Fifth Betting Round: Each player at the table is dealt with one face down card. The player with the highest ranking face up card starts off with the bet and the betting progresses in the clockwise direction and the sooner the other players have made their bet the game progresses to the show down.

The player with the best high ranking five card hand wins the pot. Regular tie breaking rules are applicable in this game.
